Debt Test

Financial Counselors of America has drawn together advice from its counselors and other leading financial experts, based on their experience, drawn up a list of 12 questions that will demonstrate whether you are in control of your cash or heading for a crash.

  1. Which is more important to you, paying your cable/satellite TV subscription, or your gas and electricity bills?
  2. Have you spent up to your limit on more than one credit card?
  3. Do you regularly exceed your bank overdraft to the extent that you are not in credit when your wages are paid into the bank?
  4. Do you keep some of your spending habits secret from your partner?
  5. Do you simply leave mail unopened if you think it contains demands for payment?
  6. Would you have to borrow money to cope with a financial emergency such as a central heating breakdown?
  7. Do you use credit cards to pay for everyday expenses such as food shopping?
  8. Have debt collectors contacted you about an unpaid bill?
  9. Do you frequently have arguments at home about money?
  10. Do you go shopping to relieve the depression caused by being in debt?

Scores: If you agree with any of the above, you need to admit you have a problem and take stock of where you are heading.

A score of three to five suggests you should consider professional help, and if you agree with more than five, you are in deep trouble and should immediately contact a counselor. They can offer expert, impartial advice as well as give you the tools necessary to rebuilding your credit and budget.
